Un'analisi filologica del termine, con un focus particolare sulle sue attestazioni nell'Edda di Snorri Sturluson (XIII sec.) è in (Boer 1927: 265-267) e poi in (Jónsson 1929: 253). Non mancano attestazioni nei trattati grammaticali islandesi, in particolare nel Primo e nel Secondo, nelle cui edizioni si possono trovare dei riferimenti. Per il primo e il secondo cfr. === Approcci grammaticali ===&lt;br /&gt;
Un primo tentativo di scrivere una storia della grammatica in Scandinavia si deve a Ólsen (1884: 1-118), il quale dà una descrizione della produzione di argomento grammaticale in volgare islandese di epoca medievale. Si tratta propriamente di una introduzione alla sua edizione del Terzo e del Quarto Trattato Grammaticale, ma per la sua completezza, è rimasta a lungo insuperata come introduzione al tema della grammatica in Scandinavia. Diversi anni più tardi, forte del grande lavoro fatto in ambito poetico e linguistico, Jónsson (1933) propone la sua storia della grammatica islandese fino al 1800. Si tratta di un'opera di sintesi tutt'ora importante, che però riserva pochissimo spazio al termine málsgrein e in generale alla sintassi. Il tema della produzione di argomento grammaticale in lingua norrena e islandese è strettamente connesso con la diffusione in Scandinavia del cristianesimo. Uno dei portati più significativi di tale evento è stata la diffusione della conoscenza del latino e della pratica scrittoria (in latino). Ciò sollecitò in Islanda in particolare l'utilizzo del volgare islandese per scrivere, per cui nel giro di un centinaio di anni dalla conversione dell'Islanda al cristianesimo, si assiste a una vera esplosione di produzione scritte testi in lingua volgare islandese, ma con alfabeto latino. È in questo contesto che emerge la particolare ricchezza di produzione di testi di argomento grammaticale in islandese. Non sorprende dunque trovare che le più recenti descrizioni dello sviluppo della grammatica, in particolare in terra di Islanda, sono solitamente connesse allo studio della diffusione del latino (Pétursson 1996b; 1996a). &lt;br /&gt;

=== Approcci linguistici e metalinguistici ===&lt;br /&gt;
Il termine è stato oggetto di attenzione all'interno di svariate trattazioni, nessuna delle quali ad esso esclusivamente dedicata, ma trattanti più in generale la terminologia tecnica nei trattati grammaticali islandesi. In diversi suoi lavori Raschellà (1982, 1983, 2007) sostiene l'appartenenza di questo termine (e di altri) a una tradizione grammaticale nordica autoctona, la cui formazione risalirebbe al periodo precedente alla cristianizzazione della Scandinavia. Tale tradizione si sarebbe formata in connessione con la pratica scrittoria runica. Così Raschellà (2018: 617) riassume la sua posizione:&lt;br /&gt;

Questi termini, rappresentativi di quello che è stato definite &amp;quot;the product of native terminological creativity&amp;quot;, sono variamente distribuiti nel PTG, nel STG e (in minor misura) nella prima parte del TTG, che trattano di argomenti propriamente grammaticali […] Esempi di questo tipo implicano dunque – come ho avuto modo di argomentare in alcuni miei precedenti lavori- una sostanziale indipendenza dai modelli classici e puntano chiaramente alla presenza parallela, nell’Islanda medievale, di una tradizione grammaticale autoctona, provvista di un proprio apparato terminologico, antecedente alla conoscenza delle opere dei grammatici latini.&lt;br /&gt;

== Discussione ==&lt;br /&gt;
La proposta che qui si avanza la seguente. Málsgrein è un composto formato con materiale lessicale di chiara origine nordica. Tanto mál quanto grein sono due termini di larga attestazione. mál è la ‘lingua’ presa nella sua interezza e nella sua concretezza, quella che si manifesta nella forma di discorso fonico. Mál è infatti non a caso il discorso parlato. Ma esso è anche ‘frase’, come se un unico termine potesse esprimere al contempo la lingua nella sua interezza e le parti che lo costituiscono ‘le frasi’. Grein a sua volta in quanto ‘distinzione’ risale al verbo greina ‘dividere’, ‘divedere in branche’ (da cui anche ‘discernere’). Se si intende il discorso come un tutto senza divisioni interne, la ‘divisione del discorso’ consiste nella segmentazione di un continuum. La prima apparizione di questo termine è in quel PTG, il cui autore è famoso per aver utilizzato tecniche di analisi fonetica della lingua che a molti sono sembrate precorrere l’analisi fonologica strutturalista del Novecento. Dunque un autore capace di cogliere la natura articolata della lingua nel dominio della fonetica. Non sorprende che a lui si debba la prima occorrenza di málsgrein che rimanda alla segmentazione linguistica. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
L’esistenza di questo composto induce a pensare, a mio avviso, che esistesse la consapevolezza della sintatticità della lingua, sebbene non espressa in maniera esplicita. Si potrebbe dire che l’esistenza di málsgrein costituisca l’indizio di una teoria sintattica ‘ingenua’ da parte degli islandesi. Uso qui il termine ingenuo nello stesso senso in cui lo usa Graffi: una sintassi ‘ingenua’ è quella che possiedono i parlanti e che consente loro di cogliere la natura composizionale del linguaggio. È possibile che tale sintassi ingenua si sia elaborata nel contesto della pratica della scrittura runica. Non a caso nella prima attestazione di málsgrein, lo si trova associato al termine rynni (scrittura runica). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
La divisione del discorso produce unità, le più evidenti delle quali sono quelle che forniscono un significato completo, ovvero le frasi. Per acquisire per una consapevolezza metalinguistica, è necessario però aspettare l’intervento della grammatica latina. È solo con il TTG che la sintassi ingenua trova le parole per poter essere espressa e il quadro teorico dentro cui essere collocata. In quel testo infatti málsgrein si configura come il migliore candidato per esprimere i termini latini oratio e sententia. E come tale viene usato non solo nel TTG, ma anche in opere successive. Si parla così di málsgrein come di una ‘frase completa’. E si procede oltre nella individuazione delle unità che formano le frasi, ovvero le parole, a loro volta considerate come parti del discorso. &lt;br /&gt;
